[Hackathon doc sprint] Answer the question "How can I help on Wikidata?"
Open, MediumPublic

Description

This is a suggested task for the documentation sprint during the Wikimedia Hackathon 2017.

The Wikidata help portal gives a lot of information about the content, but doesn't really answer the question that a newcomer could have: "How can I help?"

How could we provide a better way to answer this question?

Do you think anything should be changed, at that page in particular? (E.g. More links, different groupings, etc)

Or, were you mostly pointing towards that, as the top-level page for the more detailed (and more clearly in need of improvements)
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Contribute/Suggested_and_open_tasks
(I tried reorganizing some sections on that page a while ago, but many of the bullet-list items probably need shuffling, updating, and clearer annotations; plus more items could probably be added (?); plus the pages it links to are often in need of updates or expansion/clarification. The "Tours" section in particular needs an overhaul.)

Sorry. My point was that whoever is working on this task should start from that page.

Can we do a short brainstorming session about this at the hackathon?

@johl @Lea_Lacroix_WMDE as this was specifically for the doc sprint in the 2017 hackathon can this and other tasks be closed?

@Addshore, re: this specific task, I think it is still unresolved, and should probably be retitled instead.

re: your overall question here and in a few other tasks -- We re-used this whole "task tree" from the 2017 Wikimedia hackathon in at least two following hackathons, and it might have been useful to participants in all of them?
I wonder if we should keep reusing the task tree (which gets messier as it grows, because it always includes the old resolved tasks)
or if instead, we simply need to make a Wikidata workboard search for tasks that are also Documentation , and make sure that we've properly tagged the individual tasks. E.g. like https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/project/board/71/query/77yVdb4zTU3e/ (and ditto for Cloud Services which has also been reusing the task-tree method, in order to highlight good potential tasks for people at the documentation table at hackathons, e.g. T187319).

This task has been assigned to the same task owner for more than two years. Resetting task assignee due to inactivity, to decrease task cookie-licking and to get a slightly more realistic overview of plans. Please feel free to assign this task to yourself again if you still realistically work or plan to work on this task - it would be welcome!
