In keeping with T108178: Update livingstyleguide.wmflabs.org to latest mw alpha we should remove mediawiki from livingstyleguide.wmflabs.org and just keep a simple HTTP redirect.
@Prtksxna That's what I've thought too. But I'd like to wait for a little more and make a local archive copy of the contents.
Yep, we should surely have an archive of the contents. Possibly even in a public place.
Discussed ways to archive this content with @Quiddity, here are some options:
- Create a PDF of the unique pages and put them up on Phab or Commons. I say unique pages because some of the pages on that wiki are copies of the OOUI documentation on mediawiki.org.
- Keep a zip dump on phabricator or private server. [DONE]
- Replicate relevant bits on mediawiki.org on a single long page and mark it as archived.
He also said, 'just, don't spend more time than needed'. I am happy with just (2). Thoughts?
@Prtksxna I think option 1. is a great idea, especially given that it was meant to aim at “normal” users and therefore it would be useful from an organizational history POV to have an PDF for non-technical users in the Design Archive like https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Design/Archive/WikiFont
Yes, I like having a PDF archive. Please upload it to Commons as well, so it is easy to find for future reference.
Added the PDF - https://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=Design&type=revision&diff=2511181&oldid=2510774
@kaldari Could you please add appropriate categories to it https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Livingstyleguide.pdf
I have added a deprecation notice, and I think that should suffice.
I am not sure now about getting rid of the mediawiki installation any more . Thoughts?
@Prtksxna: Where is the repo for the living style guide? I couldn't find anything in https://github.com/wikimedia/ besides https://github.com/wikimedia/WikimediaUI-Style-Guide, which is a different guide.
Not sure what you mean. The old style guide (the one that we are deprecating) is a wiki, so no repo. It uses the Blueprint skin, which is no longer maintained.
The one that you've found is the correct (newest, most up to date) guide.
I'm working on different tasks: some are minor implementations for Wikidata or the technical wish list (like a pop up on some page), some changes are bigger (like a flow of 3 pages or so). I often put quit a bit of thinking if I should use these minor and maojor tasks to slowly fill in the new style, but am struggeling as this might be super confusing for the users. So how do you handle that? Are there any recommendations or is there even an implementation plan for desktop?
Thanks a lot for your input.
P.S. I figured this is kind of the right discussion here. Correct me if I'm wrong and I'm settung up a new ticket.
@Hanna_Petruschat_WMDE First things first, this isn't the right task for such (valuable) conversation. It has a clear scope and it's not about our current Wikimedia Foundation and beyond Style Guide or process around it. I've filed T178631 for continuation.
The other old Living Style Guide should also be fully-deprecated, so that someone who follows an old link to a sub-page there can easily find the newer docs.
I.e. https://tools.wmflabs.org/styleguide/ is marked as deprecated, but none of the subpages are, e.g.
https://tools.wmflabs.org/styleguide/desktop/index.html
https://tools.wmflabs.org/styleguide/desktop/section-2.html
https://tools.wmflabs.org/styleguide/mobile/index.html
https://tools.wmflabs.org/styleguide/mobile/section-1.html
etc
The following now redirect to https://design.wikimedia.org/style-guide/:
What is left to resolve this?
@Prtksxna The redirect of https://livingstyleguide.wmflabs.org/wiki/Main_Page is incorrect as it results in a 404: https://design.wikimedia.org/style-guide/wiki/Main_Page
Also the original installation should be removed – tagging it with Cloud-Services
Thanks for testing. I have reopened the subtasks.

Yep, that is the pending task in the description, are you taking care of it?
