Request: Remove Wikimapia from list of external map services in Kartographer
Open, LowPublic

Description

According to its English Wikipedia article, Wikimapia has licensing issues due to tracing from Google's satellite imagery without the correct permissions. Many WMF projects have policies against linking to content which infringes on copyright. (Note: I have a conflict of interest as an OpenStreetMap editor, but Kartographer relies on OSM data in any case.)

Wikimapia data also tends to be months or years out of date, even in countries with more active contributors like Russia, and is generally less developed than OSM. This is only from my personal observation, though, since there isn't an easy way to compare the entirety of both databases.

Event Timeline

It's also listed at Geohack, so I don't consider this a problem really:

It was added to Template:GeoTemplate in 2006, although it was done by a cofounder of Wikimapia so it could reasonably have been removed under today's COI rules.

On the other hand, I'm not sure why ACME Mapper is listed next to all of the others in Kartographer. The website doesn't even have its own Wikipedia article. It's used in the Topographical maps section, but the topographical data only covers the United States and OSM's Cycling layer has (worldwide) topographical information which could substitute for it.
