Bring the Editor Engagement Dashboard back
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

Since there is significant controversy on the actual role Visual Editor plays in many wikis, there's discussions on the SingleEditTab feature here and there (see T159032, here, T132806 for a small sample of what's going on) . We need some more specific data. Yet it seems the Editor Engagement Dashboard has been down for quite some time now. Is there a chance to re-open it? Ot at the very least publish some updated statistics? I'm most interested in pl.wikipedia and en.wikipedia, but other wikis might also be interested.

Relevant and permanent resources should also be linked from the main directory https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Statistics

Thanks @Nuria , especially the compare link is helpful. Does the second link show VE edits only, or is it both editors combined?

Also, are there any time stats as well? What I'm interested in the most is the time to load, both before SingleEditTab window and after it. We tried some external tools to measure that in this thread, but apparently they're all rubbish. We also have plenty of anecdata (results for the same pages under theoretically similar conditions ranging from 5 to 35 seconds from hitting the edit button til the editor opens up properly.

My gut tells me that there is little time difference between what en.wikipedia uses at the moment (default code editor > Single Edit Tab window) and what many other wikis use (default VE > SingleEditTab window), but I have no idea whether it's just me, or is it a typical user experience.

@Halibutt, let me see if I understand this request.

You're involved in discussions about the visual editor and the source editor, and which editors should get them in which circumstances. Loading time is a big point of dispute in these discussions, and you're interested in large scale statistics about how long the different editors take to load, and in particularly how VE's loading time changes when you go from two edit tabs to one.

Is that correct? It seems like a very reasonable request. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll have the capacity to work on it any time soon, particularly since my experience is with high-level editor statistics (like monthly active editors or new user retention rate) rather than site performance metrics.

But let me know if I've understood correctly, and I'll keep this in mind.

@Halibutt: performance metrics of the editor you would need to request via @Neil_P._Quinn_WMF to the edit team. The only similar metrics we have are for the backend of VE, see: https://grafana.wikimedia.org/dashboard/db/visualeditor-load-save?refresh=5m&orgId=1

This link [1] shows metrics from both editors, metrics are not editor based but rather edit based.

And by "both" we of course mean all of the dozens of editors and editing tools.
