Create a tag for phame posts that are "periodic-update"
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

We should have a tag for blog posts in phame that are period updates. These kinds of posts will be great to filter out for anyone looking for something more substantial. Or maybe others would like to subscribe.

Name: periodic-update
Type: Tag
Description: This tag is applied to tasks and blog posts that are related to periodic updates.

Halfak updated the task description. (Show Details)

I had a quick chat with @Zppix in #wikimedia-devtools

[10:39:39] <halfak> Anyone feel like having a quick discussion with me so we can create this tag (or decide not to)?
[11:13:37] <Zppix> halfak: I honestly agree with that idea, but considering if i wanted to i dont have access to create those things it doesnt make difference
[11:14:01] <halfak> Oh I have access. Just that discussion is required for tags :)
[11:14:56] <Zppix> halfak: well you have my +1
[11:15:13] <halfak> Cool. I'm going to copy-paste this chat to there and make it happen :)
[11:15:23] <Zppix> go ahead :)

Well, looks like that periodic-update tag was created already without explaining what a "periodic update" actually is...
What is a "task related to periodic updates"? What's the difference to a "recurring task" (something tracked in a task that needs to be done regularly)?

These kinds of posts will be great to filter out for anyone looking for something more substantial.

Looking at https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/phame/ , the bigger problem I have is that lots of posts are called "Status Update", making me ask "Errm... status of what?" :)

Isn't every blog post a periodic update?

Nope. Many of them are one-off anouncements.

Status update: "We did some stuff this week. We do stuff every week, but here's the stuff from this week."

Announcement: "This big thing we're working on is done and I want to tell you about it!"

@Aklapper those "Status update" posts have a date. And if you read the first few lines of the post, it should be evident. See why I want people to be able to filter them out now?

Also, they are obviously in the blog Score all the things! "Blog of the Scoring Platform team". Do you think we need a more clear way of indicating which thing the blog post is related to?

@Aklapper those "Status update" posts have a date. And if you read the first few lines of the post, it should be evident.

In the future that might be very true. :) I was describing what I see when looking at https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/phame/ : Only repeatedly "(This post was copied from <URL>)" making it hard to get an idea if the blog post might interest me. And as a curious outsider, "Score all the things" did not tell me much what it's about (I have to click first to see it's the "Blog of the Scoring Platform team"). Depends on your audience and their field of knowledge, I guess... :)

See why I want people to be able to filter them out now?

I think I understand and understood your intention. My points were that the description on https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/tag/periodic-update/ does not explain what a "periodic update" actually is (in contrast to...?) and that we normally expect allowing to gather some input before creating a tag.

Let's improve the tag description and then see how this tag will get used and close this task as resolved?

side note: sorry about the invalid commits used wrong task number (i had 2 tasks open and used the wrong task)

Oh I see you registered confusion about the meaning of "periodic" and "update". These are relatively common english terms. Maybe this is the clarification you were seeking:

  • periodic -- Occurring at regular intervals.
  • update -- An advisement providing more up-to-date information than currently known.

I'll go add this to the description.
