Adding translatable message to banner FR2015_translations takes a long time and shows error
Open, MediumPublic

Description

In fundraising we generally use a central banner to store our translations, and then other banners pull from it: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:CentralNoticeBanners/Edit/FR2015_translations

I don't know if it is due to the number of messages, or the fact that many other banners reference it, but adding a new message takes a *very* long time and eventually gives me a "Service Temporarily Unavailable" error. e.g. doing it today and adding the "minimize" message. I haven't encountered this when doing the same on other banners.

However refreshing after this shows the message does seem to have been added, and is working correctly.

Any thoughts? We don't add new messages often, but I'd hate to get to a point where it isn't working at all.

Any info on Logstash? Do you know which Translate functions you are calling, if you suspect the problem is there?

I wasn't able to see anything that looked related in Logstash, and I have no clue about the internals of the Translate extension

There isn't sufficient information here for me to start investigating. https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/X-Wikimedia-Debug#Request_profiling might be of help.

DStrine added subscribers: Jseddon, DStrine.

@Pcoombe and @Jseddon is this affecting many people? do you have an opinion on severity or importance?

@DStrine Afaik it's only fundraising. It isn't a huge issue at the moment because we don't need to add translations very often. My concern is that it could get worse and reach a point where it no longer works at all.

Searching LogStash for the FR2015_translations, I found a different error from those in T170591. So, not merging the tasks for now.

per a CN/translation meeting this could be related to T170591
