At very wide and narrow widths the top banner image presentation gets a bit funky
Open, Stalled, NormalPublic


When very wide the tiling can look a bit off:

When very narrow sometimes the portion of the image being shown is less than ideal:

Could some combination of centering and scaling be perhaps used instead of tiling?

It seems like the tiling issue would be fixed by adding background-size: cover or similar to the .featured-image .image class (and tweaking the background attribute that already exists). I remember raising this when I was in Comms and there was some reason why it wasn't already set up in this way, but perhaps it's worth revisiting.

(This would probably make the other issue even worse, of course.)

Yeah, @jrbs brought this up at the time. I've long had this on a list of things that should be looked at whenever we look into redesigning the blog (something that's not in our current plans, but I assume will happen at some point).

The tiling occurs because the banner images are 1290x164px wide. They tile when above that width, and show only part of the image when below that (as you've discovered). That was a deliberate decision, although I'm not sure why.
