I believe this is exactly as returned by the API and is sorted by relevance, so is not a bug. I don't think individual clients should be overriding that. I tagged the search team for their consideration of sorting and re-ranking by date.

@JMinor for the record, I knew it wasn't really an iOS bug. However, the reporter does have a point and provided nice screenshots so I thought it was worth filing.

We currently return the last updated date, not the origination date of the article. We also don't have, at this time, a filter to sort by date. This request is similar to this much older ticket: T40403.

prefer:recent is a keyword that can be used to return articles that were updated more recently that might be useful.

We can take a look at this later to determine priority of showing a type of filter by date or creation date but it makes the search much more complicated. Maybe Structured Data for Commons will help in the long run.
