visualeditor-welcomedialog-title should allow definite articles
Open, LowPublic

Description

I've noticed this on French Wiktionary: some languages use definite articles to display the wiki name.

  • Source text : Welcome to Wiktionary
  • Current translation : Bienvenue sur Wiktionaire
  • Expected translation : Bienvenue sur le Wiktionaire

However, it is not just possible to add a definite article for all wikis - the Wiktionary is the only case requiring it:

  • Source text : Welcome to Wikipedia
  • Correct translation : Bienvenue sur Wikipédia

Event Timeline

Is this message built from separate parts? I assume it must be, otherwise the translator would've put the article in when translating the message.

Is it worth writing messages for each project (e.g. visualeditor-welcomedialog-title-frwikt) to avoid this problem? Generally speaking our translators are more than willing to write extra translations, even if some are slightly redundant, in order to make sure we have the highest quality and most accurate translations possible.

The message is designed like this "Welcome to $2", with $2 as the sitename. Translators can't add the article on translatewiki, because it will impact all wikis.

Your solution solves the issue, but is creating language specific translation units a good option? Is that not something that will be difficult to maintain?
An other solution would be to edit MediaWiki:Visualeditor-welcomedialog-title on fr.wikt directly, but if the message changes, the upgrade will not be done.

I don't know. In previous cases I've dealt with, the entire structure of the message could change significantly from language to language, so the benefits outweighed the costs. I don't know if that's the case here.

That is probably the easiest solution, despite its drawbacks.

No idea. I don't know similar cases.

If we don't decide if the new message worth it, I'll create MediaWiki:Visualeditor-welcomedialog-title on fr.wikt next week.

That is probably the easiest solution, despite its drawbacks.
