I did a little test on stat1003. Ubuntu/Debian has a package called 'testdisk' that ships with photorec! :)

I made an 10G LVM XFS partition on stat1003, copied in some files, including one sampled gz log file, deleted the sampled log gz file. I then umounted the partiton, ran photorec searching for gz and text files.

Disk /dev/stat1003-vg/otto-test-xfs - 10 GB / 10 GiB (RO)
     Partition                  Start        End    Size in sectors
   P XFS 4                    0   0  1 20971519   0  1   20971520


3 files saved in /home/otto/recovery1 directory.
Recovery completed.

But, no files were actually placed in /home/otto/recovery1.

So, good news: at least attempting a photorec run is pretty easy. Mileage may vary I guess.
