Can not change group membership in gerrit as a group member anymore
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

IIRC, some time ago, it was possible for members of a gerrit group to change the list of members (especially adding new members). It seems, that this is not possible anymore (see T173046: Requesting ownership on VIKI extensions and T172702: Merge github repo into gerrit repo). I thought, this should be fixed with T172794: Make all groups in gerrit owner of them self, which is now resolved, however, it seems still not to be possible to edit group members of groups where I'm a member of. That requires a gerrit admin for every group membership change, which sounds unreasonable and work for Gerrit admins, which they should not need to do. Is it possible to re-configure that group members can change group membership?

Event Timeline

You must ask repo admins to change the group ownership in gerrit to the group members.

We removed the single group plugin. In gerrit the group has to own it's self for all members to be able to make changes to that group.

All new groups created for repos in gerrit will now own them selfs. All existing groups need to request this so an admin can change this.

Maybe I'm remembering totally wrong but I thought only a few groups were self-administering (e.g. pywikibot, semantic) and everything else was managed by Gerrit admins.

@Legoktm: I'm pretty sure, that I already was able to add and remove members from groups where I'm a member of, and it was not something special like pywikibot or something. From the description of the single user group plugin (I haven't found a single group plugin) it doesn't sound that this plugin provides what is asked in this task.

@Florian hi, we uninstalled the single groups plugin. All new groups will own them selfs with exiting groups needing to request that there group own its self.

This isn't to do with single-user-groups plugin (that was what created pseudo-groups called user-FOO you could use in ACLs to assign a person. But that's bad for audit-ability so we dropped it).

For this task....some groups are self-managing, some are not. What group(s) explicitly are we talking about here?

Unfortunately closing this Phabricator task as no further information has been provided.

@Florian: After you have provided the information asked for and if this still happens, please set the status of this task back to "Open" via the Add Action...Change Status dropdown. Thanks!
