Press Ctrl+S quickly and there will be no effect.
I was forced to hold Ctrl during diffs checking to make this software work.
(upd. Looks like this happens more often when diff UI have focus. Try to select some text there first)

AWB sometimes has a focus issue that the focus moves away from one of edit box and diff area, so keyboard shortcuts pressed don't get picked up. I am unclear why this happens (otherwise would fix it). If control+S is pressed while focus is in the diff area the keyboard shortcut is passed to AWB edit box and actioned. If focus has been lost to elsewhere the keyboard shortcut doesn't work.
So yes, there is a general issue that can occur with focus leading to keyboard combinations not working. I am not aware of it being related to the speed of key presses, would you please expand on what you mean by pressing "quickly" - in relation to how quickly after diff appears / how long keys are held down or something else?

OK, interesting. I can't replicate that myself. I'm not sure why there would be a difference between fast and slow pressing of keyboard shortcuts.
