Tech News questions for CE Insights
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Last time, we had three questions where Tech News figured, related to awareness and where people read their technical updates, and two specifically about the newsletter. Look at them and see if they should be kept, removed, rephrased, exchanged.

Event Timeline

I've gone through the questions, tried to see if they're relevant from a Tech News perspective (with an arbitrary importance scale */10 based on how useful I found the information from last CE Insights) and added comments on what could be improved from a Tech News perspective.

Question 224 (TC41): "In which of the following ways do you receive updates and news about WMF software development?"

Is the question relevant for Tech News? Yes (7/10).

What can be done? Change "Meta:Tech/News" to "Tech News" or "The Tech News newsletter" so it isn't implied that it doesn't count if you don't read it on Meta.

Question 225 (TC42): "Which of the following channels do you prefer to receive updates and news about WMF software development?"

Is the question relevant for Tech News? Yes (8/10).

What can be done? Change "Meta:Tech/News" to "Tech News" or "The Tech News newsletter" so it isn't implied that it doesn't count if you don't read it on Meta.

Question 517 (TC55) "Which of the following Wikimedia Foundation supported projects have you heard about?"

Is the question relevant for Tech News? Yes (7/10).

What can be done? From a Tech News perspective it's fine as it is.

Question 529.01 (TC04) "To what extent are you satisfied or dissatisfied with the following activities to broadcast technical information to our communities? – Tech News"

Is the question relevant for Tech News? Yes (8/10).

What can be done? It's probably fine as it is. Could it be rephrased?

Question 530 (TC05) "How often do you read Tech News?"

Is the question relevant for Tech News? Yes (6/10).

What can be done? This could possibly be relevant for a wider audience, but then again, we should ask less questions, not more. In hindsight, I see little specific relevance in asking this to technical contributors. It is interesting because if a very large part of Tech News readership read the newsletter only occasionally that could change how we handle the most important announcements, but I think it's even more important when we're talking about non-technical editors as those involved in technical spaces are more likely to hear about news in other ways.

We should consider asking this to a wider audience. If we can't, and we need to ask fewer questions, maybe this is a question we could remove.

In order to keep TC's CE Insights update sane, can you discuss specific questions at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Community_Engagement_Insights/2016-17_Report/Technical_Collaborations please?

Note that, so far, I'm in favor of keeping 224, and discuss/improve 225, 517, 529 and 530 (T170516).

Questions analysed and moved into the larger discussion.
