Blogpost about Google Code-in 2016 and the experience in Wikimedia afterwards
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

As the next round of Google Code-in is likely around the corner (still waiting for a Google announcement), we've been wondering how to get more awareness of Wikimedia's participation in the next Google Code-in round and also "describing the journey" when it comes to involvement in the movement (and continuing after GCI has ended).

So we had this idea of publishing a blog post before the next round starts and featuring a participant.
@MtDu came to my mind who was a GCI 2016 Grand Prize winner, attended Wikimedia Hackathon and Wikimania, and has already worked on a lot of things. And MtDu said he'd be interested (yay, thanks!).

Maybe maybe some parts of https://mtdublog.wordpress.com/author/mtdu/ could be incorporated. And/or notes from the Vienna Hackathon and Wikimania.

Drafting should probably happen by following the recommendations at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Blog

(For the records, last time we only had a pretty dry blog post after the last edition, at https://blog.wikimedia.org/2017/02/03/google-code-in/ but we linked to numerous participant blog posts at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Google_Code-in/2016#Wrap-up_blog_posts )

Event Timeline

@Aklapper
Where should I draft this and share it?

@MtDu @Aklapper sorry for the confusion above, used the wrong account. You can draft it right here!

Side Note: Google Code in 2017 was just announced today. We can apply as an organization on October 7. :)

Beginnings of a draft have been added. Will write some more next weekend, have a big deadline for college on Wednesday. @EdErhart-WMF

Thanks @MtDu - good luck with your deadline, and please let us know when this is ready for a look!

Hi @MtDu - just checking in on this. How's it going?

@MelodyKramer

So sorry for the delays. I just have deadline after deadline for college (next one is Nov. 1), but I'll make time tonight to get a draft done.

Thanks for the reminder!

No worries whatsoever - just wanted to check in. Good luck with your deadlines (I remember that time well, and don't miss it!) Looking forward to reconnecting in November.

Sorry, I lost track on this. :( Is there some draft somewhere available, by any chance?
I can also totally understand that if time is too limited we could drop this idea and decline this task.

@MtDu: Still around? :) ^^

Looks like @MtDu is busy in real life. And that is no problem but normal and can happen. :)
I am going to decline this task for the time being to clean the backlog a bit. Feel free to reopen.
