Why are we doing this?
Getting notifications about article updates was cited as a desired feature by the >100 articles user cohort during the recent Reading List survey. These notifications would alert users that an article they have saved offline has been updated and provide users with the option of updating this article to the newer version.
Proposed design
Users will be able to see if there are updates available on both a reading list level and on an individual article level from the Saved tab. Alerts will appears as small 'dots' next to individual articles and as a short message on reading lists in the reading list view. On an individual reading list, the alert message is transformed into a button which users can tap on to trigger the updating of all of the articles with available updates in that list. Articles can also be updated using the bulk edit action on both the Saved articles and Reading lists views.
Update progress is signaled in-line with a progress indicator. Additionally if a user navigates away from the saved tab, they will be presented with a toast message when the selected articles have completed syncing.
