Avoid translation changes that result in red links
Closed, InvalidPublic

Description

A translatewiki translator, @Wladek92, recently edited a string that is used as a link page target on French wikis.

The problem is that the link now points to a non-existent page, and is therefore a red link. It was necessary for an admin to change the message locally on frwiki. Problem reported on frwiki's patrolers bulletin.

In my example, there are hundreds or even thousands of wikis that have a red link for this link.
There should be something to prevent this, such as a notification system for links modified using translatewiki for client wikis.

Event Timeline

This particular message is only used in Wikimedia wikis where the content language is French, so less than ten overall.

If we assume that there is a link translation change in one language every .. something like every three months, and that all wikis using this configuration language are going to have a red link, that quickly makes a lot of impacted wikis.

I do agree that it is a possible problem. But I don't see it as a very high priority. I think by default MediaWiki ships in a configuration that has plenty of red links. The simplest thing I can imagine is to do a diff between each release and add it to the release notes in hopes that somebody reads them.

Translation problem, please resolve with the translator. There's plenty of stuff that can break if people change established translations, sure.

better is not to propose links for translation in this case to be more secure. .... or separate the page title from the link ID to make them independant (... possible ?)
