Replacement hardware for cumin masters
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Our current cumin masters (neodymium and sarin) had their warranty expired in January 2016 so they're pretty close to our usual five years lifespan. Since they also need to be updated to stretch (T177385), it might make sense to now get replacement hardware, install it with stretch and decom the old systems.

The current servers have 24 cores and 32 GB of RAM (which were mostly unused), the replacements can even be smaller systems.

(The Cumin masters are no good candidates for Ganeti IMO (e.g. to ensure that we still have Cumin even if Ganeti is down)).

Event Timeline

That is a lot of cores for very little memory. Can the core count be lowered? (If so we could go with a single CPU system to save some money on it.)

Looking at its history ion grafana, it doesn't ever seem to come close to using the CPU it has. So a single CPU and 32GB of ram seems good enough, right? (Lowering the cpu core count from 24 (which is really dual 6 core cpu) to a single 8 core CPU should be fine, but I'd like feedback.

Since this is a public task, I cannot put down our pricing. I'll just link to the associated tasks though.

The alternative is we just allocate our standard lvs/misc machine, which were last ordered on T181419. Cost per system isn't that high, and then the cumin masters would be identical to our standard lvs and misc system build.

That may be overkill for them, but the alternative is we quote out a single CPU machine as mentioned in my previous comment. Pinged @MoritzMuehlenhoff via irc PM for input.

The hardware configuration from T181419 seems perfectly fine for Cumin masters. I don't have a good estimate how much cheaper a single CPU/32 GB machine would be compared to this setup, so I'll leave it at your (and Faidon/Mark's) discretion whether evaluating a lower spec option is actually worthwhile.

These are being tracked for replacement on the misc system order, T189317.
