Can we drag and drop marked text from the changes box to the editor?
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Issue
In current user tests we found out users expect some kind of "drag and drop" feature to transfer text from the "show changes" side on the left to the editor box on the right. It seemed they would choose copy and paste as a workaround.

Solution
Offer a way to transfer (e.g. drag and drop) text from the changes side to the editor.

Note
We are looking for a technical solution here to keep the UI free from instructions which usually stress the user if there are too many of them. If there is no technical solution we need to make it more clear "copy and paste" is the actually wanted action.

Highlighted text can be dragged already: Highlight in the diff, grab, drag, drop to editor. Do you think they did not know or that some other kind of drag-drop would be needed?

This came up, because in the user testing we did with unexperienced users, most of them expected some kind of button to "transfer" text from one side to the other. Some of them then used the ctrl+c / ctrl+v feature, but they were insecure about doing so.

In the current paragraph based prototype, we mention the ctrl+c / ctrl+v as an option to transfer text. This needs to be tested.

Hmm yeah I can confirm, that at least in modern browsers dragging and dropping works with selected text.

Maybe people expect, that one could drag words without selecting them first? Because they are highlighted already anyway? Like they are "text bubbles"?

Sorry, to answer the original Question: We could probably make theses "marked" text blocks drag- and drop-able with some effort. 🐐

Thanks for the insights. At the moment this is not an urgent task. We will get more insights in the upcoming user tests and may have more clearance on this topic afterwards.

@Hanna_Petruschat_WMDE do you think this might be still relevant for the new UI? If not, feel free to close the ticket.

I think it could still be of value, not only for the current version but also for the discussion pages and even other features so I would like to keep it in the backlog.
