Remove performance-team@lists.wikimedia.org to convert into a google group
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Hello,

OIT has received a ticket to convert performance-team@lists.wikimedia.org to a google group. I have already created performance-team@wikimedia.org as a google group on our end. Can you please delete the mailman list?

Thanks,
Jo

Hey @JGulingan just wanted to let you know that instead of adding projects like Wikimedia-Mailing-lists as a subscriber to put that in the tags section when creating tasks, thanks!

Please note that the mailing list performance-team has a private archive. When a mailing list is deleted, we need to know if the archive should also be removed. I'd recommend yes, since the following is the typical result of leaving private archives:

  • mailing list is active, all users can generate their own passwords (via email) to access mailing list preferences and the private archives.
  • mailing list is deleted, all users who still retain their own passwords to the now deactivated list can still use those passwords to access the archives for the list
    • no new list passwords can be generated, so the access to the archives will slowly degrade as people lose passwords or couldn't access the archives to begin with.
    • archives become stale and we never know when to remove.

Since the above tends to happen, I wanted to specifically ask if the archives can also be deleted for this list? (If so, I'd recommend those who may need the archives review and download what they need first.)

Hope that clarifies! Otherwise simply deleting the list is straightforward and any operations team member can do by following: https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mailman#Remove_a_mailing_list

Assigning this back to the requester for followup question regarding archives. Please address, and set assigned to no one once updated.

Thanks!

@RobH The OIT request was from me (member of perf-team). Deleting the archive is fine, thanks!
