Ask Commons and Wikidata community for feedback on naming of 'captions' and 'descriptions' on Commons file pages
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Community input is needed on a good name for two new (additional) fields that will be added to Commons file pages: 'captions' and 'descriptions' (both need to be named differently!).

Preferably, we know about the community's preference right after the Christmas / New Year holiday period - the team can then quickly continue its work, implementing the 'new' names.

A bit more background from @Ramsey-WMF:

The Structured Commons team is initially introducing two multilingual freeform text fields:

  • A "caption" that works similar to how labels work in Wikidata. It is meant to be a very short field that serves as a brief title for the media, and it supports entry/display of the text in multiple languages. This will be a new metadata field on the File page.
  • Structured multilingual Descriptions. Commons already has Description fields that can support text in multiple languages, but this is currently achieved in an inelegant way via the template system, and is only semi-structured. The new, updated implementation will utilize the new Wikibase instance on Commons to store these fields in a structured manner that is similar to how multi-language support works for Labels and Descriptions for Items in Wikidata. These fields can be much longer than captions, and may also support limited markup (italics, bold, etc.)

The "Caption" term is just a temporary working name. There is a need to select better names for the above data entities to avoid confusion with Wikidata or MediaWiki entities with the same name. Community input on this is desired.

Both of the above entities will be indexed for Search.

The Caption will be part of the initial Structured Commons feature release in Summer 2018. The release of Structured multilingual Descriptions depends on how quickly other items can be completed.

I'm totally missing WHY these need to be named different.., they seem to have similar purposes to the wikidata terminology. From a frontend perspective, naming them different only increases confusion to me.

Can this reason for difference be documented in the input page ?

@Ramsey-WMF has given some info there - I hope this makes things clearer?
