Cite tags should not appear in the article table of contents
Open, LowestPublic

Currently, when a cite tag is present in a section header, it appears in the article contents. If an article header contains multiple references, this becomes confusing for the reader, as the ref tag cannot be clicked for more information.

Proposed solution
Ref tags are hidden on the page contents, and only appear once you reach the section in the article.

Note that according to

  • Headings should normally not contain links, especially where only part of a heading is linked.
  • Citations should not be placed within, or on the same line as, section headings.

Although I agree that fixing it would be nice for general Mediawiki sites.
