"Syncing 1 articles" notification on beta ???
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

I surprisingly get the "Syncing 1 articles" notification whenever I add an article to the reading list. Considering "Syncing" means the "Syncing of reading list across devices" feature, I find that surprising for two reasons:

  1. I wasn't logged in
  2. I thought that feature wasn't in beta ( 2.7.224-beta-2018-01-06)
  3. Further, a download icon for syncing doesn't seem intuitive

In case it isn't about "Syncing of reading list across devices" then I find the wording to be misleading.

The notification is to inform you that the article is being saved for offline viewing, which is done by default when you add an article to a reading list.
I might agree that the verbiage of "syncing" in this case is confusing, but we'll let Design/Product make the decision.

Ok, so it's not related to syncing the reading list across devices. I still find the wording confusing as stated in the task description, of course.

BTW, The word "syncing" made me think that it was used as the same notification would be shown when updating an article in the reading list (when visiting the article when user is online, as stated by @Dbrant once in the IRC). Then a little test showed me that it was not the case. I guess showing the notification when updating an article in the reading list has least 2 advantages,

  1. Let's the user know that the page in their reading list would be updated when visit it whilst online
  2. Makes the "syncing" wording a little meaningful

I feel empathetic while reading the following statement from a Quora answer regardless of the fact that the answer is a little old,

I enjoy saving articles for offline use, for instance when flying. One thing that is not entirely clear to me is how you can update an article to its most recent version; presumably, simply by saving again, but the interface doesn't make it too clear how this works.

Currently the most straight forward way to fix this is to show the new "Downloading 1 article" notification when the app updates an article present in the reading list.
