Description

I was interested in making a Discord bot that would search for Wikipedia articles in miscellaneous chat channels. After a discussion in the cloud IRC channel as to if it can be hosted in the Cloud VPS, I was told it would be better to let this be discussed openly.

  • What is a discord bot?

A Discord bot user is an automated user controlled by a program or a script run on a computer or a VPS. It uses a special API key to function as a normal user and responds to specific commands after a prefix (e.g !say hey)

  • How could that benefit Wikipedia

I am not entirely sure on the answer to that question.

please describe what a "Discord bot" is, and also what "Discord" means. Also see https://mediawiki.org/wiki/How_to_report_a_bug
Your description above only describes what a bot is in general.

I am not entirely sure on the answer to that question.

Hmm, how did you get to the conclusion to file this in Wikimedia Phabricator and beforehand bring up this idea in a Wikimedia chat room if it's unclear to you how this is related to Wikimedia services (like Wikipedia)?

I am sure I left a definition on my task, tell me if it needs clarification More-Less they function as chatbots in Discord

Could you please describe the relation of "chatbots in Discord" to Wikimedia websites?
Do you have a specific example what that chatbot would post in some Discord instance?
How would that chatbot know / How could a user of that chat bot decide in which Discord instance on some external, 3rd party website that chat bot should post?
Would the source code of that chatbot be public?
