Editing wikidata descriptions in mobile apps should take the article protection level into account
Closed, InvalidPublic

Description

Per the RFC that created T184000 when editing wikidata data via the mobile apps the app should not allow editing if the article for which the data is being shown is protected.

This is currently specific to the wikipedia apps, however with future wikidata client editing capabilities this will also likely need to happen.

Right now we have a situation where the following can happen:

  • dewiki Berlin article and Berlin wikidata description are being vandalized via the wikipedia app
  • dewiki protect the Berlin article
  • the app user vandalizing the article and description find they can no longer edit the article but can still edit the description
  • description vandalizam continues.

@Addshore The Android app already has this logic. The user cannot edit the description if the article is protected. (Unless you've found a counterexample?)

No example, but this seems to be something the the communities may not know (given what has been discussed in this and the last RFC on the topic).

Does this also apply for the iOS app?

The iOS app does not yet support editing descriptions.
So far, this has only been rolled out on the Android app, for all wikis except enwiki.

That's great!

I wonder if there is a good way to make sure the community knows about this fact.

FWIW, announcements about this rollout have been made on Wikidata project chat, as well as the village pumps of the respective wikis to which it applies, and on mobile-l.

I wonder if something inline on each wikipedia as part of the protection page might work to inform people that missed the notices.
I might propose this on enwiki.
