Switching between 'Automatic translation' options deletes translated text
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

  1. Start translation (from any language to any any language).
  2. Click on a paragraph to translate it. The paragraph will be displayed on Content Translation page according to default setting in 'Automatic translation'.
  3. You may make any edits in the paragraph. Then, select a different setting in 'Automatic translation'.

Your translated paragraph will be gone.

Even the saved translation (translations in progress) will display this behavior.

Note: You can bring back the translated content by selecting the default option again, but it's not obvious for a user.

Translation engines provide different version of the text, which makes it hard to transfer the changes. As noted, we currently preserve the changes done to each version which helps to prevent data loss from the user. Given that the MT service to use is normally selected initially with little changes, this strategy seems enough.

I agree. I'm not sure what is the problem. Selecting the same engine brings back user's changes, so no data is lost. I just tested it.

But if user's changes are lost, then it's a bug.
