Background
This task explores using the Current events portal to source news items for the Explore feed as a possible solution to providing fresher news content to users.
Potentially related tasks: T150967, T140102
Why are we doing this?
- The "In the news" content is often very stale (news items can either sometimes stay there for a few days, and is often showing items that are ~1 day old).
- "In the news" content has a tendency to be Euro-Western centric.
Proposed solution
Show fresher articles from the Current events portal in the Explore feed as an alternative to "In the news" for the specific languages that have this portal.
Notes on tech/content limitations:
- The Current events portal is not on all wiki languages, and is most fresh and shows newer daily content on en.wiki (see for example the da.wiki portal there are only a handful of dates in Jan 2018 with content).
- Categorization of articles (for example "Politics and elections") are not structured categories but freeform (i.e., there is no ability to only select items in a particular area of interest)
Design elements (proposed)
- Create a new card on the Explore feed for "Current events" which features a single 'top' event.
- Create a detailed "Currents events" view to view all events for the day (similar to the On this day details view)
- Explore adding a notification option for users to be notified for particular current events (threshold for notifications tbd)
