Additional network ports for elasticsearch servers?
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

While reviewing quotes for the cloud replica, i noticed the line items mentions quad port 1gige for the r430's. Checking lspci on a random elastic machine seems to suggest these too have the quad port:

ebernhardson@elastic1040:~$ lspci |grep Ethernet
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5719 Gigabit Ethernet PCIe (rev 01)
02:00.1 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5719 Gigabit Ethernet PCIe (rev 01)
02:00.2 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5719 Gigabit Ethernet PCIe (rev 01)
02:00.3 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5719 Gigabit Ethernet PCIe (rev 01)

If there are additional ports, can they be bonded to provide additional network capacity to elasticsearch? Are there ports available that they could be plugged into if so? We generally bump into network limits whenever we do cluster restarts which shuffle a bunch of data between machines, providing even a second 1gige port could significantly improve the time it takes for the cluster to go back to green.

I'm also not sure this is worth the effort (not sure how much effort it would be). It's not necessary for standard prod usage, it would only help cluster maintenance actions for the most part.

Talked to a few people about this. While it is could be possible and has been done, sparingly, in the past, it's typically more for redundancy than increased bandwidth. We could upgrade the existing servers to 10G, but after some conversation decided it's not really worth the effort. When we replace the servers we will include 10G nic's in those replacements and slowly have the clusters upgraded over the next couple years.

We'll make sure this gets addressed during upcoming server replacements.
