Refreshing a source page in the 2017 wikitext editor switches back to one of old editors (when VisualEditor is temporarily disabled)
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

In 2017 WikiEditor, I went to a source editing page, located at https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=V&veaction=editsource&action=edit or anything with &veaction=editsource&action=edit. I clicked a refresh button and/or pressed F5. The page switches back to one of old WikiEditors, depending on preferences.

If I enable the Enhanced Toolbar, after refreshing a source page in '17 WE, the mode temporarily switches back to the 2010 WikiEditor.

If I disable the Toolbars, after refreshing the source page in '17 WE, the mode temporarily switches back to 2003 WikiEditor.

In another scenario, I went a source page and then returned back to the article, the address bar went like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=V&action=edit or anything with &action=edit. Then I clicked the refresh/reload icon or pressed F5, and the mode switches me back to one of old WikiEditors.

This happens in most browsers that I've tested on, especially Firefox and Chrome. Nevertheless, the mode switches back to 2017 WikiEditor after exiting one of the old WikiEditors.

Steps to reproduce (Scenario A)
  1. Enable the 2017 wikieditor at Beta Features tab via Preferences settings
  2. Enable the "Temporarily disable the visual editor while it is in beta" option at the Editing tab and Save changes
  3. Go to any page that you want to edit.
  4. If the address bar contains &veaction=editsource&action=edit, click the Refresh/Reload button, or press F5
Steps to reproduce (Scenario B)
  1. Enable the 2017 wikieditor at Beta Features tab via Preferences settings
  2. Enable the "Temporarily disable the visual editor while it is in beta" option at the Editing tab and Save changes
  3. Go to any page that you want to edit.
  4. Click the "Article" tab
  5. If the address bar contains &action=edit, click the Refresh/Reload button, or press F5
Actual results

You'll be directed to one of old editors

I found out about T138556, which was declined because the ?action=edit and ?veaction=edit in URLs were intended for source mode(s) and VisualEditor modes, especially when reloading a page.

It doesn't do this for me. If I click that link, it loads the visual editor. Refreshing also loads the visual editor.

Do you have the single edit tab, or two edit tabs?

I believe that this happens when I enabled the "Temporarily disable visual editor while it is on beta" option via Editing tab of Preferences settings. If you can disable VisualEditor, I believe that you'll experience the same results that I experienced.

I clicked it, and different results to me; so did refreshing the page. I was directed to one of old WikiEditors. Moreover, see T190765#4086066.

I added &safemode=1, resulting in https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Jumper_(1991_film)&veaction=editsource&action=edit&safemode=1; still directed to one of old editors.

@Deskana My apologies for not answering the "edit tab" question. I think I was using the single-tab mode when I enabled the "temporarily disable VE" option.

The issue still persists when the VisualEditor mode is disabled, so I think the task should be reopened.

Scenario B now becomes impossible to reproduce, but I can still reproduce steps of Scenario A.
