Could federated queries be made possible through the visual interface?

Thanks for your suggestion. To consider your needs in future developments, it would be helpful to get some more context in the ticket. My understanding is, that currently, federated queries are possible via SPARQL-syntax, but not via an interface. Is there an interface you refer to (e.g. https://query.wikidata.org/ ?) Or are you referring to a possible future product?

A helpful template could be this: (fill in the gaps and/or customize according to your needs)

User Story: As a user, I want to _________ so I can _________

Context of use: I assume the user/I would want to _______ because___

Current Problems: Currently, _________ this is not good, because ________

Possible Solution: One way to improve the situation for the user is ______

Thanks for the immediate reply! Yes, context indeed would be useful, we are a group of users meeting at a federated wikibases workshop and this is just a discussion we wanted to document here. We were indeed looking at https://query.wikidata.org/ Thanks to the efforts of Adam Shorland we now have a docker install available for Wikibase which comes packaged with WDQS. This is a great start, but the suggestions we discussed and documented in this issue are potentially for future products that might come with Wikibase docker images. This is very speculative, but I am happy to participate in any user studies you might run in the future if it could be helpful. Filling in the template below as well. Happy to discuss more details over email / other comms channels.

A helpful template could be this: (fill in the gaps and/or customize according to your needs)

User Story: As a user, I want to be able to query the wikibase instance we have in my own institution (Rhizome) as well as wikidata and other institutional wikibases so I can get more contextual information about the artists / artworks / software which we have in our archive (currently in wikibase).

Context of use: I assume the user/I would want to search for an internet artwork and check it's technical dependencies and then get the details on e.g. Netscape Navigator software from Wikidata because we don't necessarily have all the technical information in our archive, but it's useful for preservation / conservation / exhibition purposes.

Current Problems: Currently, the query service is only usable if you can write SPARQL, this is not good, because only a few people in our institution can use it.

Possible Solution: One way to improve the situation for the user is to build upon other existing visual interfaces for SPARQL querying and learn lessons from these in order to develop tools in the future that can be used by beginner users.
