Description

There are a few good resources, websites, repositories that gathers projects with good first bugs for new contributors.

Some of the resources are linked in this post:

Some of the venues for hunting bugs are:

It would be good to explore some of these resources and submit a pull request on behalf of Wikimedia to get added to their list.

Interesting thought! I have seen many newcomers coming from platforms like you mentioned above and stay and contribute for a long time. Many newcomers visit these sites in order to kickstart their open-source development. If few of the beginner bugs get posted on these websites, we can get a lot of new contributors. The bugs that we usually provide to Google Code-In students, would be a decent way to start, in my opinion. :)

All listed items seem to refer to Github tasks only:

HacktoberFest is arriving. Potential opportunity to bring newcomers to Wikimedia Tech. :)

HacktoberFest is arriving. Potential opportunity to bring newcomers to Wikimedia Tech. :)

The difficult part of Wikimedia participation in Hacktoberfest is that it is a GitHub pull-request based contest. There are a few Wikimedia software projects which use GitHub as their canonical workflow, but the large majority of our software projects do not process pull requests from GitHub at all.

Was looking at this again now that we have a nearly complete list of canonical (means: not mirrored) Wikimedia repositories on Github thanks to T186736.

However, Github does not support a logical OR when searching for open issues. Which makes it very scattered to search for label:"beginner friendly" user:commons-app is:issue is:open but also label:"first-timers-only" (mentioned above) or label:"Hacktoberfest" (mentioned above) and having 12 users and/or currently 473 repositories (which would lead to a HTTP 414 URI Too Long error anyway if OR was supported).
