This problem came on the German-language Wikipedia's feedback page yesterday. A new user complained that they could not edit the content of a category using the VisualEditor.
What they saw is this:
They expected to be able to edit the pages in the category through the VisualEditor. Since there is a lot of space there, we could show a hint on top of the category preview pointing to the corresponding help page.
You mean add pages in that category? Is so, that's an issue older than VE. That's funny you report that because I was ready to report it as well, after seeing a newbie struggling at adding a category this week end.
The idea would be to have a message overlapping the list of results below the editing part, saying something like "please add articles to that category by editing those articles"?
Sure, it's confusing/unintuitive in MediaWiki in general, but in source code editors there is no obvious spot to place a hint.

Yes. A small box in the top-center of the preview which says "You want to add/remove pages? Here's how", linking to a help page with instructions.
