Having all the categories for a page displayed in a sidebar can be overwhelming; it world be better to show a limited number from a sorted/prioritised list.

+1. I just pitched an idea to Isarra that we only show 5 categories in the sidebar, and then push the rest to the bottom. And then leave it up to editors to decide which 5 more prominent categories are put on top in the wikitext.
How would editors do so? I would be super hesitant to endorse any method which is skin-specific.
