Migrating a wiki from another software to MediaWiki should be a pleasant experience
Open, NormalPublic

Description

Currently we don't really support migration from another system to MediaWiki. We should make a list of the major wiki software, and also other software used for similar knowledge management purposes (e.g. sharepoint), maybe even other highly popular content management software (e.g. Wordpress), and make sure for each we have

  • a landing page that's reasonably easy to find
  • feature comparison (if I switch from, say, Confluence to MediaWiki, what am I going to lose? what am I going to win?)
  • documentation of the migration process (or, ideally, a migration script)
  • documentation of the wiki configuration (if I want to match or approximate feature X of the old system, I need extension Y)
  • maybe some help with finding consultants or wiki hosters who can help with the process
