Design a "Personal Space Needed" sticker
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Suggested at Wikimania, I (@Rfarrand) will mentor a student during the next round of Google-Code-in-2018 to see if we can come up with something good.

  • Submissions must be free and must not include any non-free materials. Please mention the license under which you put the file (such as a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0). If you re-use another author's design work, the license of the author's work must allow this, and you must give credit as required by the license.
  • The design must be submitted as a vector .svg file (which can be resized without pixellation). The design must not include any bitmap graphics (examples for bitmap file formats: PNG, JPEG, BMP, TIFF, WEBM, etc).
  • Upload your design here in the corresponding Phabricator task. (If you do not have a Wikimedia Phabricator account yet, create one!)

Submit your design and it might appear in next year's Wikimania in Sweden!

How about this as a description:

People need their space, which is sometimes in short supply during conferences, such as the annual Wikimania. To keep participants at ease, it would be good to have a sticker available to self-identify as being sensitive to being crowded.

We need a nice sticker design that can easily convey this sensibility but still be welcoming. In short, a good design!

Just back from break, thank you @Ebe123 this is a great description.

Looks good to me. Based on experience I'd add: "The design must be submitted as a vector .svg file (which can be resized without pixellation). Do not embed a bitmap image (JPG, PNG, BMP, GIF, etc.) in an otherwise empty SVG file."

I adjusted the explanation a bit to be more explicit, same for https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T206249 , and also explained that the proposal must be uploaded in Phabricator. (You're free to change that to Commons etc. but it should definitely not be the GCI site, as content gets removed there after a few months.)

I optimized and minified SVGs,

a) Citation needed style
I thought that it will be funny to make something looking like citation needed stickers.

b) A human figure inside brackets with text saying `personal (spacebar character, see design) needed) (Wikimedia colors)

c) A human figure inside brackets only version (Wikimedia colors)

Assets used (in personal_brackets and personal_brackets_title):

Thanks! :) Nothing that you need to fix I'd say, but note that on my Linux machine I get Font 'Trebuchet MS' substituted with 'DejaVu Sans' so the text in the upper left corner is a little bit too wide and hence off... It seems the font can be installed without having to pay, though.

@SDBagel I was facing a similar issue. If you're using Illustrator you can right click the text box and choose "Create Outlines". If you're using something else, it should have a similar setting.

It gives a perfect idea of "personel space needed' as it shows a community, with lots of contributing coder but one is there who is stating a message ' personel space needed'.

@Aklapper Sorry for the delay, but I believe I have fixed the font issue if you'd like to take this new file.

Can the people that uploaded designs mention under which license can their stickers be used (eg. Creative Commons Attribution 4.0)?
You can choose Edit Comment at the dropdown menu for when you added it.

I have noted that on the GCI task description.

Also, I would recommend just placing these stickers at Wikimedia Commons and leave here a link, instead of storing the images themselves on phabricator.

Hello again,
In the end, which (if any) of the designs were used?
Thank you.

here you go a minimalistic sticker for telling people to give the person some personal space{F31501490}

also license is creative commons attribution 4.0

I'd like to submit my creation here. Please check.

I am resubmitting my work.

Just wanting to ask: In the end, which (if any) of the designs were used?
Thank you.

@aaPle sadly all of our in person events were all canceled due to COVID 19 so we did not end up printing any stickers.
It is very likely that we will print a few when our event schedules pick back up again :)
