Work with Wikispeech towards their production deployment goal and generate documentation
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

The Wikispeech project is moving forward towards an eventual deployment into the beta cluster and then Wikimedia's production network. Navigating this process is not a straight forward exercise and has caused problems in the past for affiliate organizations (for example the MediaWiki-extensions-GWToolset rollout).

@bd808 will be working with the Wikispeech team to try and help them work through some of the roadblocks. As a by-product he will be trying to produce some high level documentation about the process and considerations that need to be addressed when producing a new software component that will be used by Wikipedia's scale of anonymous traffic. The hope is that these documents will be useful in the future for organizations and individuals who are in the early planning stages of a project that will eventually be used on the main Wikimedia project wikis.

Event Timeline

@Lokal_Profil, @Sebastian_Berlin-WMSE, @Jopparn, and I met on 2018-09-30 to discuss next steps for this project. They are currently working through some of the issues raised by their initial code reviews and working towards add a role to MediaWiki-Vagrant that will make further review easier. After the meeting I sent an email to some security and release engineering team members to see if we could get them to attend future meetings to answer questions directly.

This initiative stalled out pretty badly. The WMSE folks and I had a lot of meetings, but we never got anywhere useful. Fundamentally I failed in getting others interested in helping.
