Regression: only English available
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

The website only offers English in the language "selector". The website is not ready for launch until it reached parity with the existing website.

Event Timeline

Varnent subscribed.

As indicated in email - this is a soft launch - additional languages are being added in coming weeks.

@Varnent I was unable to find a different task under wikimediafoundation.org that represents your intent to add additional languages. If there is one, please merge this task into that one.

If there is none, please consider re-opening this task. Declining a task means you disagree with the concern or suggestion and have no plans to address it. However, you've repeatedly stated you do plan to add languages besides English. As such, this task being declined appears.. confusing.

On this project we have used Phabricator to track new bugs or technical requests (i.e. things which will require changes). Core work related to initial site development (i.e. things which were part of initial plan and already announced) are being documented on Meta-Wiki (as the interested audiences for the site do not really use Phabricator so it would be sort of hiding the info from them). I declined this ticket to help avoid an expectation of things like this being documented in multiple places. However, in the rush of those days did not properly explain that variation. So I can certainly appreciate your point about how the decline could be seen.

If someone wants to reopen, I am fine with that. However, I would suggest the description and title be modified. "The website is not ready for launch until it reached parity with the existing website." is odd to include after the site has already launched. Also the inclusion of "Regression" in the title implies the old site was actively supporting languages beyond English, which had not been true for several years.

I still don't see a process to add translations, so this bug is not fixed. The announcement https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikimedia-l/2019-July/093048.html only says there might be something in the future.
