CX2: Learn more link for "too much unmodified content" errors and warnings needs update
Closed, DuplicatePublic

Description

For the warning (T190279) and errors (T190283, T221359) related to excessive unmodified content in the translation, we want the "learn more" link to point to the new documentation page about it: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Content_translation/Translating/Translation_quality

Users should access the page in their language if such page exists. That is, if they see the warning message in CX (because they are translating into French, or they explicitly selected it as their UI language), they should reach the French version of the page.

Currently the "cx-tools-linter-learn-more" link goes to English Wikipedia help page instead (note the url shown at the bottom of the screenshot):

Looks like the help page updated recently by @Amire80 is good enough as a starting point and can be used instead of where it is currently pointing.

@Trizek-WMF can you please check if the contents in following page is usable for this purpose?

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Extension:ContentTranslation

I don't see any section or content about untranslated contents from machine translation help. Am I missing something?

No, you are right. The content is not in a separate section. Let me fix that.

I've added an anchor (and some i18n stuff), so https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Extension:ContentTranslation#machinetranslation will go to the matching section whatever is the language:

(Those links will work when the page will be marked for translation.)

What do you think of adding a clear statement saying that most translations containing only automated translations are usually quickly deleted by local admins?

I will defer to @Pginer-WMF and @Amire80 to suggest how to write this, taking into account the CX2 proposals too. In my opinion, it may look like a generalization because it depends on the content. For shorter text which possibly has a better chance of being accurately translated may not always need a review, and in those cases admins may choose to not delete them.

We definitely want to point to documentation in the current language.
I'm more in favour of a dedicated (sub-)page for a specific topic rather than one section of a much larger page.

For CX1 we had this one. For CX2 I'd propose having a similar dedicated page but with the following differences:

  • Avoid the term "abuse" in the title and when describing the issue.
  • Mark for translation the contents so that they are available in different languages.
  • Update contents to reflect the new support that CX2 provides including paragraph specific warning (T190279), full document error (T190283), and how potentially problematic translations are tagged for the community to easily review (T190798)
  • Link to the main place for other Content Translation topics in case the user wants to keep learning about the tool.

I don't have a preference on the place where to have such page, but it would be good to have similar pages in the same place, since we are going to have this kind of explanatory content for different types of errors.

Pginer-WMF renamed this task from [CX2] cx-tools-linter-learn-more for automated translation goes to English Wikipedia help page to CX2: Learn more link for "too much unmodified content" errors and warnings needs update.May 24 2019, 8:41 AM
