EPIC: What are the current best UI practices for mobile editing?
Open, MediumPublic

Description

Planning Document(s):

Etherpad

Background:

Before diving into any edits, tweaks or redesigns that will aim to increase mobile contribution to Wikipedia, we need to now take a look around to gain an understanding of what are the current best practices and trends in mobile editing user interface design. A comparative analysis will give us an opportunity to methodically review the different kinds of editing experiences that are happen on the mobile web, i0S and android platforms.

Goals of Study:

  1. Collect data by category of editing experience type, focusing on both long and short form editing experiences.
  2. Identify specific features/characteristics that might allow for a consistent mobile ui across products.
  3. Set the stage for prototyping of new ideas.

Notes:

The study will be conducted by three designers:

To do after study:

  • synthesize findings
  • present/share findings

Deskana moved this task from To Triage to Research on the VisualEditor board.

I was thinking that instead of comparing everything that's out there in the world, perhaps this would be more practically applied if I focused the analysis to the areas that we are exploring in our interventions.

Do you agree with this approach? @Esanders @JTannerWMF @DannyH @Whatamidoing-WMF

I think narrowing the scope for this iteration makes sense and we can create subtasks for what the focus is for each.

+1 I like that idea @JTannerWMF . So we should make subtasks for:

  • Section editing
  • Toolbar improvements
  • Remembering scroll position
  • Table of Contents
  • Differentiating UI Modes
  • Figuring out when you are finished (feedback)
  • Improving copying and pasting

I will write these tickets and add them as children to this ticket (which I will update to include the word EPIC in).

Removing task assignee due to inactivity, as this open task has been assigned to the same person for more than two years (see the emails sent to the task assignee on Oct27 and Nov23). Please assign this task to yourself again if you still realistically [plan to] work on this task - it would be welcome.
