Restructure and improve 'Basic information' section
Open, HighPublic

Description

In a critical evaluation of the current Special:Preferences layout and information structuring, @Pginer-WMF has provided a proposal that restructures and simplifies grouping of 'Basic information' section.

Implementation steps:

  • Splitting in
    • User specific information and bolding user name
    • Security options
    • Global preferences option
  • Make two factor authentication link a button
  • Add icons for improved visual grouping

Change 458626 had a related patch set uploaded (by Jforrester; owner: Jforrester):
[mediawiki/core@master] [POC][DNM] Special:Preferences: Re-design the view-only "basic" section

https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/458626

With a little bit of hacking around I got to this:

Is that the entire page? Where are all the parts that were in "signature" and "email options" now? Is "restore defaults" still down the page?

Obviously not.

To be clear, it is obviously not the entire page, and obviously "signature", "email options", "restore defaults" and so on would still be in their previous places below. This task is only about the "Basic information" sub-section. :)

Note that while WMF wikis disable the "real name" field, a default MW install includes one:

so our design should account for this being present.

In my opinion the two data fields, edits and registration date shouldn't be directly connected.
It's better to say “8 edits. Registered at 20:20, 11 November 2020“
We shouldn't make those one message sounding like we're pointing with the finger.
