Investigate ways of attaching toolbars to the bottom of the viewport
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Identified as a high importance item in the mobile editing report:

In some mobile browsers such as mobile Safari, the browser doesn't make it clear to the website what the size of the viewport is, and may not tell the site whether the keyboard is up. Not knowing the size of the viewport makes it difficult to attach a toolbar to the bottom of the viewport, as without knowing its height then the toolbar may either float in the middle of the screen, or perhaps even appear off the screen altogether. Having a toolbar on the bottom of the viewport might be useful for saving screen space or improving mobile workflows.

This task is to perform some investigation into ways that we might be able to attach toolbars to the bottom of the viewport, see if there are technological or design solutions to the issues faced by users, and to do general research in the area.

Event Timeline

I've researched this in the past, and the answer is basically that it's currently impossible. The best I found was people guessing based on knowing the phone model & OS version, but even then it will vary with autocomplete and different IMEs.

I listed the point not to suggest we find a workaround, but to highlight that we should really avoid pinning toolbars to the bottom of the screen, or at least be aware that if we do that, they will be hidden when the keyboard is up in iOS.
