Discovery of gadgets/extensions/tools for Wikibase
Closed, DuplicatePublic

Description

As a person who just installed Wikibase, I want learn of all the possible tools I could add to my Wikibase instance, so that I can add tools/extensions/gadgets that make Wikibase easier/more effective/more efficient.

For example, some users at the workshop did not know about Wikidata Integrator, pywikibot, Quick Statements, or the data dump tool. (Or the Wikibase User Group email list.)
People also expressed interest in examples of what you can do with Wikibase.

I think this is one of the things we should strive to do on wikiba.se website
If you want an overview of the current wikidata extension take a look at what I just wrote @ https://addshore.com/2018/09/wikibase-extensions-on-wikidata-org/
But these details should all really live on wikiba.se

Looks like a good start / state to me (much better than 2018 when this ticket was written)
So I think we should close this!

Of course, the trouble is what's useful may change. But it is true that most specific items mentioned have been added.

One thing that struck me was that - where used on wiki, e.g. on Wikipedia - Lua tends to be a big part of the solution, in concert with templates; yet while this fact is mentioned, the route to the Lua interface for Wikibase was unclear.

Extension:Wikibase Client/Lua seems to have been the main place for this but now largely points to other pages - I fixed its link on the Extending page, "Detailed reference for Lua in MW/Scribunto", to mention Wikibase, but I suspect that page was different when linked and it may be appropriate to link directly to the generated Lua documentation (this itself has a link on the text "Wikibase DataModel JSON schema for statements" to the JSON data model on wiki, which is now a separate doc page...).

Likewise, it's not obvious where to find examples of Lua modules using this API. Equivalents of English Wikipedia's Module:Wd and Module:WikidataIB (used more for infoboxes) are likely to be a part of a wiki-based solution. This is a harder nut to crack as the modules above are unwieldy and likely customized for Wikidata and the wikis they're on, but perhaps they and/or MediaWiki wiki's Module:Wikibase should be linked? We don't seem to have a "full-stack" page+template+module+wikibase example.

Perhaps we should also link to the Wikibase extensions category, and/or include recent contributed extensions like EDTF, and Local Media (now part of the distribution).

Lastly, I would've thought Wikibase DataBridge / client editing would feature here, but perhaps it is not yet in a state that it can be used by third-parties. Documentation seems largely develoment-oriented - it is assumed you know how to use the assets - though I did find this template editing guidance via the Wikidata product talk page.

Incidentally, the way Extension:Wikibase Client/Lua stuffs important stuff about Lexemes and SDC into messageboxes is bad, as this fails on the mobile version of Wkipedia (m.) - one link in the first box and everything after the first phab link is cut, including all discussion of SDC:

vs.

- maybe just moving it out of the box there is enough?

Documentation should be treated as living and changing. To the extent that tickets have meaning, we need to have some definition of done for this one.

I'd also like to remind everyone that the documentation in question is on mediawiki.org and can be collaboratively edited by everyone. As WMDE's technical writer, I watch all these pages and will intercede should vandalizing or inaccurate changes be made.
