Receiving confusing notifications such as, "A link was made from ‪ABC to ‪XYZ." (after template edit?)
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Beginning Saturday22 September 2018, user comfr on wikipedia began getting notices that various pages had been linked to Flame treatment, even though no such links had been made. Every day, several more notices appeared.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Notifications for user comfr.

Event Timeline

Krinkle subscribed.

@Comfr Only you can see your notifications. Can you create a screenshot image of the problem, and then share that image by dragging it into a comment below?

Probably caused by this change in a navbox: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Packaging&diff=860763498&oldid=860763072&diffmode=source

I'm not sure if links from templates are supposed to be filtered out?

This is not a screenshot. I copied and pasted from the page into this box.

matmarex, I see what you mean. The template was added, resulting in Flame treatment‬ being added to all those pages.

But why are they showing up, one by one? For example, I got notified September 27 about "Intermediate bulk container," even though the template had been added earlier. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Intermediate_bulk_container&oldid=857651935

Aklapper renamed this task from Incorrect notifications, such as, "A link was made from ‪Bulk box‬ to ‪Flame treatment‬." to Receiving confusing notifications such as, "A link was made from ‪ABC to ‪XYZ." (after template edit?).Sep 29 2018, 10:12 AM

Even more confusing, the notifications provide a link to "View changes," but the changes have nothing to do with a link to Flame treatment‬.

Similar issue reported in 2013, marked as declined: T50547: Echo: Pagelink notifications triggered on template update. I'm afraid it is still unfeasible to improve this behavior.

rECHOa01ebbc045c2: Fix page-linked notifications could be the cause, in particular this remark:

Also remove the code that refused to route events to a page creator if
they didn't have an agent. It's perfectly legitimate for events not to
have an agent, that shouldn't preclude them from using non-agent-related
locators.

Per T205742#4626983, the notifications seem to have no reference to the users...
