Actually it was mostly just that things were hard to find, and that was easier to fix than explain. Although separating pre-extension-registration / v1 / v2 could be done better.

I disagree, extension registration is one of the few parts of MediaWiki that is documented that you can develop with it without actually reading all of the relevant code. Documentation really has improved since T131515 was created. In this particular case, even this particular use case is explicitly documented.

I don't see what you can really improve there, it really is in the Top 5% of our documentation pages.

Mostly the issue was that Manual:Extension.json/Schema is hard to find and the other pages are very light on details.
