Request for information about hosting services for WM-ES
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

I am creating this ticket as a board member of Wikimedia España, Spanish Wikimedia Chapter.

We are reviewing our procedures related to web and email hosting and domain management, among other technological tasks. We are evaluating the possibility of taking advantage of Foundation hosting facilities, so we would like to receive more detailed information about them, in order to evaluate how these services could cover our needs and eventually request for the appropriate one.

So we kindly request information about the features of the different hosting services the Foundation can provide to local Chapters.

Thanks in advance.

Hola @Trastolillo - Wikimedia does host a number of Local Chapter wikis indeed as you can see at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:SiteMatrix (in fine). For example https://pl.wikimedia.org is the wiki for WM Poland. I don't think there would be any inconvenience to create a wiki for WM-ES if requested (& I can help doing so). About email, I am not sure how do they manage it, so no comment on that (if I remember rightly, Chapters are entitled to request an OTRS queue, but OTRS might not be the most UI friendly system). Saludos.

if I remember rightly, Chapters are entitled to request an OTRS queue

Yes, there are a number of chapter queues in OTRS.

Yes, there are a number of chapter queues in OTRS.

Thank you. It is some time I resigned my OTRS adminship & access, thus I was not sure if those still existed.

Thank you for your reply, @MarcoAurelio. However, we already have several services implemented, such as our website and mail server. The problem is that at this moment those services are hosted in third-party servers. We would like to have them hosted in WMF servers, if possible. In order to explore this possibility, we need more detailed information about the "hosting facilities" that WMF can provide to local chapters. Thus, we seek a system-level solution.

To clarify a little that last comment, WMES uses a commercial dedicated server, on which the different services then run on separate containers. The hardware is owned by a third-party (Hetzner), and hosted on their DC. No third party has access to the data contained therein. Even if some of their employees tried to steal something from there by abusing having physical access to the machine, it would be far from trivial.

As MarcoAurelio said, we can create a wiki for chapters. That would run on our cluster just like all the other wikis. It would be separate from the other questions though. What is the URL of your website? The link seems to be a page on Wikipedia, are there other external pages?

We already run a wiki for our chapter (well, actually a couple, one public and another private).

The main url for WM-ES page is https://www.wikimedia.es, although there are a number of other domains and subdomains for different functions.

Dzhan and others answered at T211414#4822356 T211414#4805585, is that enough/does that answer your questions? I suggest if you need further information to ask a concrete question we can answer, or to file a different ticket with a request you need from us; otherwise I would consider this as resolved (?). You can always ask more questions at a later time by opening new tickets, there is never going to be a problem with that. But I want to make sure this is not open without reason.

Resolving as there has been no response since the last question/. please re-open and update if there is still something we can help with
