Make query service logo and favicon have a placeholder image (not wikidata logo)
Open, MediumPublic

Description

Problem:
By default the query service uses Wikidata's logo and favicon (with a looking glass overlay). As more installations of it pop up they still use the Wikidata logo and favicon while they really shouldn't.

Image:
What the logo currently looks like in a default MediaWiki install:

What the favicon should be: <tba>

What the logo should be: <tba>

BDD
GIVEN a fresh query service installation
THEN the logo is the Wikibase logo with a overlay encouraging to swap the icon
AND the favicon is the Wikibase logo with a looking glass overlay

Acceptance criteria:

  • By default the query service no longer uses the Wikidata logo
  • By default the query service no longer uses the Wikidata favicon

@Addshore Can you make a suggestion for the text? (I don't know where it'd need to be configured.)

Suggestion: Lets use the wikibase logo, make it less opaque (like the Mediawikilogo above) and add the text with the instructions. @Addshore: What would the correct text be (since we probably need to bake it into the pixels except s.o. wants to add imagemagicmagic to the build)

The Wikibase logo sounds good

I'm not really sure what these instructions would be, I guess that depends on how this task exactly is completed.

It will look like

but where we have the sunflower, there will be a Wikibase logo or a magnifying glass and instead of the text $wgLogo… we'll have… So reframing the question: what will our variable for the logo URL be? $wbqsLogo? (wbqs=WikiBaseQueryService)

I suggest adding this logo as the default that was designed by @Charlie_WMDE:

(For https://federated-wikidata.wmflabs.org)

@Ladsgroup @Addshore Thanks! Both are fine, UX will pick one.

What we lack is the the name of the customization variable to add the text on top (no matter what is on the image we are going to use.)

So we have picked the make configurable part of this ticket up as a seperate ticket and it is now on our iteration board.
That means we can report back here once done and say actually how the thing can be configured and then decide on some text.

Thanks! I stall this ticket here until then.

I would really prefer if we stick with the Wikibase logo - similar to how it was done for MediaWiki. This is not a logo that is supposed to stick. It's a placeholder.

I second what @Lydia_Pintscher said. basically this

but as a basis this

The text would obviously have to be adapted to explain where the logo can be changed, but only for where the logo is shown, not the favicon since the text would be illegible. Would be great if the favicon could be changed in the same place as the main logo, so it can be done in one go.

Same goes for the splash screen T223582. Maybe it's possible to give the users the choice to also remove it entirely if they don't wanna put a massive logo there.
