Register Schema: namespace
Closed, ResolvedPublic3 Estimated Story Points

So that we don't clash in the future with other extension we should register our namespace.

See for instructions. Also add it to this list (and check that whatever namespace number we pick doesn’t collide with those extensions).

Event Timeline

Yeah, somewhat. The namespace of 12300/12301 was chosen randomly by me when pair-programming that first prototype and I'm not sure if those numbers are ideal. (Ping @Lucas_Werkmeister_WMDE)

We also still have to do the documentation update.

I think I said this somewhere on Gerrit as well, but that’s not ideal, no – according to extension default namespaces, namespace numbers above 3000 are supposed to be reserved for wiki administrators.

I think it should be possible to change the namespace numbers in extension.json and add a small update.php script (see WikibaseSchemaHooks::onCreateDBSchema) that moves pages to the new namespace number, and then after a few weeks we can assume that all existing installations ran update.php and remove the update script again.

While we're in this very early development perhaps we can even just nuke the DB's and start clean without the legacy update stuff?

Yeah I think we can.

If we can do that easily, then that would make the migratory workaround for the change in the serialization unnecessary as well.

Well, we can, I’m just not sure if it’s easier to coordinate nuking the test install and all our local development wikis than adding the compatibility bits.

Lucas_Werkmeister_WMDE set the point value for this task to 3.

Decision in meeting: I will write the compatibility patch.

Change 487043 had a related patch set uploaded (by Lucas Werkmeister (WMDE); owner: Lucas Werkmeister (WMDE)):
[mediawiki/extensions/WikibaseSchema@master] Move Schema namespace to new number (12300 → 640)

Change 487043 merged by jenkins-bot:
[mediawiki/extensions/WikibaseSchema@master] Move Schema namespace to new number (12300 → 640) is still working, and the namespace has the new number according to the API.

Devs, don’t forget to run php maintenance/update.php after updating!
