wikia.com is changing to fandom.com
Open, LowPublic

Description

Wikia.com is in the process to rename all wikis to the domain fandom.com.

Could this new domain be supported in the drop down for the site URL in the preferences please?

Event Timeline

Not all Wikia wikis are moving to fandom.com, and for the wikis that do move, wikia.com will continue to work as a redirect probably indefinitely. So while baked-in support would definitely be nice, it shouldn't be needed for things to continue working unless I've missed/misunderstood something (which is definitely possible).

According to their roadmap all community wikis will change to the new domain in early 2019. It's right that forwarding will work, but nobody can say for how long.

New users who come on board AutoWikiBrowser may not know the connection between wikia.com and fandom.com.

Adding the new domain into the drop down list is also a clear signal that AutoWikiBrowser works with those kind of wikis (which I personally was not sure about until I spotted wikia.com in the drop down list when I started out)

Just my two cents though.

P.S.: Of course this is only relevant for versions 6+. 5 stopped working with wikia/fandom (for me).

Forwarding will work indefinitely because there's over 13 years' worth of random linkage from elsewhere on the internet to wikia.com (note that the original domain name wikicities.com still redirects to Wikia/FANDOM's home page, even though that name/domain hasn't been used for almost 12 years now). This isn't an argument for proper support in AWB, mind, it's just pointing out that things will (should) continue to work until it's added.

I'm having troubles logging in unless I set it to a custom wiki directly to the fandom domain (it's a "The login module requires a POST request" error, a la #T210916). Dunno if that's related.

AWB 5.10.1.0 cannot login to wikia.com projects moved to FANDOM, neither as "wikia.com" project nor as custom "fandom.com" (or "fandom.com/wiki/") project.
AWB 6.0.0.1 produce "The login module requires a POST request" error on login unless the project set to custom "fandom.com".

Can you adopt AWB to migrated wikies?

AWB 5.10.1.0 cannot login to wikia.com projects moved to FANDOM, neither as "wikia.com" project nor as custom "fandom.com" (or "fandom.com/wiki/") project.

It's not supposed to be able to

AWB 6.0.0.1 produce "The login module requires a POST request" error on login unless the project set to custom "fandom.com".

It's been working fine for other people. That error happened on older versions, but I've never been able to narrow it down

There seem to be a number of people unable to connect to Wikia now using AWB 6.0.0.x and the "wikia.com" project setting (see e.g. earlier comments on this task, and T222925). While finding the underlying issue would be great, it seems like just changing that setting to "fandom.com" instead would be a simple interim fix that shouldn't cause any additional issues.
