Emailability: Indicate to user benefits of providing email address during account creation
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Presently, users are able to create an account without an email address. There isn't text encouraging users to add their email address when creating an account or why it is important. Our intention is to inform users why they should provide their email on Special:CreateAccount.

If a user is creating an account they will see text near the box to input their email address that explains the benefits of adding their email address.

Proposed design

Add some assistive text below the email field explaining the benefit of adding an email address. (Propose using the same text and placement as T194420).

A note for when we are ready to finalize the copy for this: I think we should think of a way to indicate that adding an email is not just for account recovery -- it's also the way to find out when important/relevant things happen on the wiki. One of the reasons the Growth team is addressing this idea is because we believe that when newcomers find out what's going on in the wiki, they are more likely to come back and keep editing. We should be upfront about that to the user.

OTOH, we will have text about receiving emails with the check box field to opt in for receive emails about editing (T215668) separately in this page. I am actually quite wary of making it seem like adding account email will also opt them in to receiving important notifications when firstly this is not strictly true, and secondly it can have a detrimental effect (people not adding an email to avoid spam).
Something to also bear in mind is that we have another task proposing to add text letting users know they will receive a verification email, so the assistive text will be quite long. (T215661)

[...] I am actually quite wary of making it seem like adding account email will also opt them in to receiving important notifications when firstly this is not strictly true, and secondly it can have a detrimental effect (people not adding an email to avoid spam).

By default, the notification are set to be sent by email for the following (at least on enwiki) messages: "Failed login attempts", "Login from an unfamiliar device", and "Email from other user".

I see two issues:

  • This also needs to be implemented for mobile.
  • Can we move the text that says, "Email is required to recover your account if you lose your password." to be closer to the email field, and farther from the CAPTCHA field? I think it looks like it goes with the CAPTCHA field because of the current spacing.

Moving back to "In Progress".

MMiller_WMF moved this task from Inbox to FY 2019-20 on the Growth-Team board.

Our team has decided that we will not be working on this project during Q4. Moving it to the next fiscal year.
