Welcome survey: analyze free-text responses
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

The welcome survey contains two questions that allow users to input their own text: "Why did you create your account today?" and "What topics are you interested in editing?"

In T214120, our team's ambassadors translated free-text responses to English. This task is for analyzing the translations to identify what patterns and takeaways we have.

Some of the most important questions to answer are:

  • Are there common free-text responses that we should add as multiple-choice responses to either question?
  • Are users typing anything that gives us more clues about their needs or the experiences they are looking for?
  • Are users writing anything that makes it seem like they consider the survey to be a negative or confusing experience?

Event Timeline

Question: Are there common free-text responses that we should add as multiple-choice responses to either question?
Response: Yes, we should add an option for respondents to indicate they created their account for educational purposes (Wiki Related Courses, School etc.). There should also be an option for respondents to indicate they created their account to add photos or save and track their contributions and/or articles.

Additionally, in regards to topic selection, for Korean Wiki, we should add an option for animals, anime, brands, people, and languages. For Czech Wiki we should add animals, brands, people, travel, nature, structures/architecture.

Question: Are users typing anything that gives us more clues about their needs or the experiences they are looking for?
Response: Yes, users were keen on wanting to add and update photos, including captions. We also saw users are interested in keeping track of their behavior. Enhancements to this experience for new comers makes sense.

Question: Are users writing anything that makes it seem like they consider the survey to be a negative or confusing experience?
Response: There weren't any obvious indicators that users found the survey to be negative. It was interesting that respondents provided free text responses that were already available in multiple choice.

This is complete, and I am adding the ideas for additional topical areas to T211446: Personalized first day: potential survey wording changes.
