Text size in "personal links bar" on desktop sometimes inconsistent
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

In the personal links bar the text font sometimes goes too big blocking the edit/talk/history tabs off.

I can't see any pattern.

A refresh will normally fix it but I don't get what causes it. My scripts applied at the time were https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:RhinosF1/common.js&oldid=884904278

No idea why the font size would be inconsistent between page loads. The font size adjustment is a feature specific to mobile WebKit (Safari's engine, used by all browsers on iOS).

It is possible to disable the font size adjustment using -webkit-text-size-adjust:

But I am not sure whether this would be beneficial, the adjustment is probably better for readability on mobile? On the other hand, if somebody switched from the mobile version to the desktop version while using a mobile device, they probably know what they are doing and really want to use an identical interface as on desktop; and as you have shown, the automatic adjustment can mess it up.

The large text does make it nearly impossible to edit but what I don't get is to me it seems random and a refresh fixes it.

I'm not currently working on this. Per my previous comment, I'm not sure what is the right solution.

The new Vector being built as part of https://mediawiki.org/wiki/Desktop_improvements will work better at smaller resolutions. The existing Vector was never intended for this medium and that will unlikely change as part of the project.
